If the shedding of Gentile blood (both military and neonate) is considered "acceptable" in order to protect Israel and her rituals, it should surprise no one that Jewish organisations would minimise the suffering of mere animals. The idea that creatures experience daily conditions virtually identical to those found in Nazi camps is "insulting," at least to those who presume to speak for the Jewish population on the issue. An example of this outrage was the Anti-Defamation League's reaction to PETA's "Holocaust on Your Plate" campaign of 2003.
PETA’s controversial exhibit, which consisted of eight
60-square-foot panels, each showing photos of factory-farm and
slaughterhouse scenes side by side with photos from Nazi death
camps, graphically depicted the point that Yiddish writer and Nobel
Isaac Bashevis Singer made when he wrote, "In relation to
[animals], all people are Nazis."
"The effort by PETA to compare the deliberate, systematic murder of millions of Jews to the issue of animal rights is abhorrent," said Abraham Foxman, Anti-Defamation League national director. "PETA's effort to seek approval for their 'Holocaust on Your Plate' campaign is outrageous, offensive and takes chutzpah to new heights."
While some of PETA's past statements have ranged from fanciful (eggs are "cholesterol bombs") to inaccurate ("Beef: It's What's Rotting in Your Colon"), Uncle Semite believes they got it right on this one. Regardless of whether or not one chooses to eat meat, it must be recognised that the modern, mechanised treatment of "food animals" from birth to table is ghastly. Let us briefly review some similarities and differences between the treatment, testing, and transport of owned creatures today and that of Nazi camp prisoners during World War II:
|Six or seven egg-laying hens crammed in a small cage 24 hours per day||Six prisoners crammed in a single bunk overnight|
|Live male chicks literally thrown into the trash to suffocate because they have no value to egg farmers||Elderly, children, and others with no value culled for immediate gassing and cremation|
|Beaks cut off to keep desperate hens from pecking each other for cage space||Prisoners tattooed for identification; beaks left intact|
|Result of incarceration is certain death in assembly-line fashion||Result of incarceration is near-certain death in assembly-line fashion|
If the suffering of chickens isn't compelling enough, perhaps we
should move on to "man's best friend," the dog, or man's closest
relations, the primates:
|Animal Testing:||Concentration/Death Camps:|
|Researchers force-feed cleaning chemicals to dogs and laundry powder to lab mice||Doctors forced Gypsies to drink seawater, causing enormous pain and serious bodily injury|
|Researchers caused brain damage by injecting toxins or by removing parts of monkeys' brains||Jewish prisoners' flesh cut open and wounds intentionally embedded with bacteria, dirt, and glass|
|Scientists intentionally give animals diseases so that these same scientists can try to "cure" them||Doctors injected live tubercle (tuberculosis) bacilli into lungs of prisoners to test for natural immunities|
|Medical experimentation of some value to mankind (not "animal-kind") conducted, but at terrible cost||Medical experimentation of some value to mankind conducted, but at terrible cost|

|Livestock Transport:||Prisoner Transport:|
|Animals shipped sitting or standing in their own waste, the dead and dying among them||Prisoners shipped standing in their own waste, the dead and dying among them|
|Animals shipped without food or water||Prisoners shipped without food or water|
|Animals shipped in cattle cars, suffering through extreme heat and cold, sometimes freezing to the sides of the car in winter||Prisoners shipped in cattle cars, suffering through extreme heat and cold, sometimes freezing to the sides of the car in winter|
Unfit humans; unfit hogs
Returning to PETA, their exhibit, and their news release for a moment:
"PETA wants to stimulate contemplation of how the victimization of Jews, Gypsies, homosexuals, and others characterized as "life unworthy of life" during the Holocaust parallels the way that modern society abuses and justifies the slaughter of animals. [...]
"The very same mindset that made the Holocaust possible - that we can do anything we want to those we decide are 'different' or 'inferior' - is what allows us to commit atrocities against animals every single day."
Unfortunately, it seems that no matter what our friends at the ADL think, PETA actually did get it right on this one.
